Salmon Arm Real Estate & Community Guide

Living in Salmon Arm, BC

Salmon Arm is the place I call home and where I help people buy and sell real estate. Below is an overview of the city, along with how to look at what's for sale here.

Where Salmon Arm is

Salmon Arm is a city in the Shuswap, in British Columbia's Southern Interior. It sits on the shores of Shuswap Lake, at the spot where the Salmon River empties into Salmon Arm Bay. It belongs to the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) and is the largest urban centre in the regional district. The City describes Salmon Arm as located "at the junction of the Trans Canada Highway (TCH) and Highway 97B."

Salmon Arm became a city on May 15, 2005, on the 100th anniversary of its incorporation. Mount Bastion lies to the north across the lake, and Mount Ida rises to the south.

A regional hub

According to the 2021 Census from Statistics Canada, Salmon Arm had 19,432 residents, a 9.7% increase from 2016. The City calls Salmon Arm the "main regional service and trade centre for the Shuswap." The City lists forestry, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and commerce as parts of its economy.

Services, schools and getting around

The City lists municipal water and sewer service, four fire stations, an RCMP station and both door-to-door and fixed-route public transit among the community's services. It also describes health care services in the community.

Within the city there are "five elementary schools, one middle school and a senior secondary school with two campuses," part of School District No. 83. Salmon Arm also has a campus of Okanagan College, which offers university transfer, continuing education and vocational courses.

Recreation and the lake

The City notes that Shuswap Lake has "400-plus kilometers of shoreline" with "more than 20 provincial parks." The mountains around town have trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

In town, the City lists parks, playgrounds, tennis courts and golf courses. There's also the SASCU Recreation Centre, which has an indoor pool and a full-size gym, and the Shaw Centre, with two full-size ice rinks.

Arts, culture and history

The City highlights the restored heritage buildings at R.J. Haney Heritage Park and the Salmon Arm Fall Fair, which has run every year since 1897. The Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Area is a spot for wildlife viewing. Throughout the year there's live theatre, art shows and music.
